Benjamin Franklin one of the founding fathers of the United states once said; An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Furthermore, education is the best inheritance you could give your child in this age and era. Long gone are the days when parents gave cattle and land to their children as inheritance.

First of all, quality education in Kenya today is mandatory . Regardless of where you come from, all 47 counties need to have institutions to provide this essential service. This is not new news to the 2nd largest county in the county, Turkana. Being the newest institution of higher learning, Turkana county offers  a solution for multitudes of young people. It will therefore meet needs of anyone  with a craving for education, enlightenment and skill.

Turkana university college

The college was inaugurated on January 27th 2017 becoming the first Public University to be established in the vast resource – rich ardeepAfrica - cradle of knowledge logoea of north western Kenya. The cradle of knowledge, as its motto describes, aspires to be a preferred University College in humanities, science and technology. The university wishes to provide holistic university education, create, preserve and disseminate knowledge and skills. This they plan to do through superior pedagogy and research for transformation of lives and service to humanity.

Schools

The institution has four schools so far; School of business and economics, school of science, school of education and the school of humanities and social sciences. They offer courses ranging from community development, information technology to early childhood development courses. in addition, the courses vary from certificate courses to diploma to degree courses.

Admissions

The university college’s admission requirements are; duly filled application addressed to the Registrar- academic Affairs. Relevant academic and professional certificates should accompany the application. The application fee to be paid is determined by the level of programme applied for. Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for. Hence, it will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and approval by the University Senate.

Local leaders and residents termed the decision to to allow the establishment of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Turkana Campus  ‘solid enough to unlocdeep Africa - turkana University collegek the education potential’ of the semi-arid region.

Excitement is spreading fast in the region following the inauguration of the university. Kneeling down facing the yellow sunset and with her arms wide open in prayer, Jackline Akiru, a resident of Turkana county said : “Thank you Lord for the great gift. It had been a dream for many generations. For our children, this will now be a reality.” In addition, She also said university education had previously been a preserve of only a few in the region. “We can count how many children have been to university. Many parents also feared sending their children away in search of education. They feared they may never return,” said the mother of three. She therefore is optimistic that her child, who is in Standard Eight, will work hard and enroll in the university.

Finally, the institution has received course proposals from residents. Such include petroleum, health, education, fisheries industry, livestock and civil engineering, conflict resolution and peace building. Read more here.
