History

Safaricom started out in 1997 with Michael Joseph as its C.E.O at the time. He served in the company for 10 years before Bob Collymore succeeding him. He is the current C.E.O. It dates way back to 1993 when it started as a department of Kenya Post and Telecommunications Corporation. In 1997 it got incorporated as a private company. Vodafone Kenya Limited owned 40% of the company as at then. It later in 2002 turned into a public company. The government owned 60% of the shares. 25% of these, later on, got auctioned in the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Growth

By 2009, Safaricom had grown its subscribers to slightly above 6 million, a customer base of about 13.36 million and 8650 outlets countrywide. It bagged several awards in the same year. It won the Best Broadcast Commercial Category for its entry of the M-PESA ‘Send Money Home’ TVC in the GSMA Global money awards. Safaricom also was named the winner in the product innovation category (M-PESA) in the Kenyan Banking Awards. In the Stockholm Challenge, it bagged the winner in the Economic development category ( M-PESA).

Best Services

Among the services, Safaricom has had to make it the best mobile service provider in Kenya is MPesa services. In the society today, it is becoming impossible for any Kenyan to live without MPesa. The most frequently used mode of money transfer in Kenya today is MPesa.

Safaricom has also cut a niche for itself in the internet service provision with cheap data bundles and fast internet speeds. With these features, Safaricom has been able to cater for all its users both heavy Internet users and light internet users.
